In the 1950s, flying was an exotic and rare treat for most. In the '60s and into the '70s, flying became more affordable, and airlines began advertising more to the middle-class than the wealthy. Flying became a tad less formal; dressing up a bit was still expected, but full-on suit-and-tie was less common among pleasure-travelers.
